SCRHA Defeats Rental Data Collection Bill

Legislative Updates,

SCRHA Defeats Rental Data Collection Bill; Thank You for Your Action

AB 1188 (Wicks), which would have led to the collection of rental assistance program data and have encouraged the creation of local rental registries, is dead for the year. The bill was held in the Assembly Appropriations Committee earlier today.

SCRHA’s lobbyist worked tirelessly against the bill citing concerns over privacy issues and possible legal ramifications. Thank you to the SCRHA members who responded to previous Action Alerts and contacted their elected officials. This is the third time that SCRHA has stopped rental registry legislation from this author.

SCRHA has already blocked several bills that would have impacted the industry negatively, such as the bill that would limit a housing provider’s ability to conduct criminal background checks and another that would have taxed rental housing providers for “the privilege of providing rental housing.” We hope to provide positive news as more Legislative deadlines are met.
