SCRHA Files Injunction & Asks County to Suspend Enforcement of Eviction Moratorium

SCRHA has filed the necessary paperwork to proceed with its lawsuit against the County. An initial hearing has been set for June 21, however, SCRHA has asked the County to agree to suspending enforcement of the ordinance until the injunction hearing. If the County doesn’t agree, SCRHA will file for a temporary restraining order against the moratorium and ask the court to shorten the time for the injunction motion. SCRHA is hopeful the County will agree to suspend the ordinance and enforcement and not spend taxpayer money unnecessarily.

SCRHA is still preparing resources should the ordinance become effective June 3. Click here to access more information about the ordinance, including a recording of the recent webinar.

San Diego City Property Owners Encouraged to Contact Mayor’s Office Regarding Fire Alarm Retrofit

SCRHA is still working to address the costly and poorly timed Fire Alarm Retrofit mandate being enforced by the City of San Diego. If you have been through a fire inspection and subsequently been told you must retrofit fire alarms, please let Mayor Todd Gloria know how this costly requirement will impact your rental property and ability to provide housing. Many owners have received estimates of $40-50,000, sometimes more, for small apartment communities. And in many cases, these owners are not receiving rental income as a result of COVID-19. SCRHA is working to address this outrageous mandate at both the local and state level. In the meantime, property owners should share their plight with Mayor Todd Gloria at 619-236-6330 or MayorToddGloria@sandiego.gov.

Anti-Price Gouging Rules Expire in San Diego County

On May 20, Governor Newson signed an Executive Order extending price gouging rules in certain counties. San Diego County was NOT included in that order. Since September of last year, San Diego County was under an Emergency Declaration that triggered laws regarding price gouging, limiting rent increases and newly set rents to no more than 10% over the previous rental amount. That order was extended in March and then set to expire on May 22, 2021. SCRHA is hopeful the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services’ website will be updated soon to confirm the expiration of the orders in San Diego County.
