The deadline to introduce bills is February 16, 2024. Make no mistake, legislators who don’t value housing providers like they should are already thinking of ways to make your job harder. You may not have an interest in politics and legislation, but legislators are interested in you and care little for the impact on your wallet and long-term ability to provide much-needed housing.

Join us and learn which terrible ideas from 2023 might be revived and what bills certain legislators, like those in the Renters’ Caucus, will think up for 2024. The newly formed caucus was successful in 2023 with a bill to limit your Security Deposit amounts but have completely ignored more broadly impactful issues like the availability and cost of property insurance and the underfunding of the courts. We can’t afford to let ideas like a Tenant’s Opportunity to Purchase Act (TOPA), Statewide Rental & Eviction database, and banning Criminal Background Screening gain traction. Engaging on these bills early in the legislative session and answering SCRHA Action Alerts can help stop them before they get to their respective house floors where they are all but rubber-stamped by the supermajority.

Join us to learn what’s in store for 2024, and how you can help SCRHA support you in this challenging environment.
