SCRHA Advocacy Minimizes Impact of Lemon Grove Tenant Protection Ordinance
This past Tuesday, August 18, the Lemon Grove City Council voted to move forward with a local ordinance. SCRHA has been engaged on the issue since a temporary urgency ordinance was passed back in February. After a nearly six-month process that included several public workshops and city council hearings, a draft was approved that provides some additional protections beyond state law. Specifically, an expanded definition of Substantial Remodel, a requirement to provide notification of state and local law at the inception and termination of tenancy, public education and resources provided by the city, and a requirement that housing providers provide the city with copies of No-Fault Just Cause Termination of Tenancy Notices within 5 days of noticing. The ordinance still has to come back to the council for a second reading/final approval and will go into effect January 1, 2027. Thank you to all local housing providers who made their voices heard throughout this process. SCRHA will share more details once a final draft is provided.
Take Action on Bills to Expand Anti-Price Gouging
There’s still time to weigh in on two bills, SB 493 and SB 1365, that would alter existing law so that anti-price gouging rules could be in place indefinitely and make it harder to offset costs related to property improvements. Together these bills could result in a form of permanent rent control. Contact your Assemblymember today and ask them to vote NO. These bills can come up for a vote at any time!
