Legislative Updates,

Governor Signs Slate of Housing Bills Ahead of Oct. 14 Deadline
SCRHA reported last week that SB 567 (Durazo) was signed into law, but the fate of two other impactful bills, AB 12 (Haney) and SB 267 (Eggman) had not yet been decided. Unfortunately, the Governor signed those bills yesterday. AB 12 will limit security deposits to no more than one month’s rent with very limited exceptions. SB 267 will require housing providers to accept alternative evidence in lieu of credit screening when the applicant has a government subsidy. Also recently signed was SB 712 (Portantino) having to do with e-bike storage and safety of rental units.

NAA Comments on FTC Junk Fees Proposal
On October 11, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced a notice of proposed rulemaking which would prohibit “hidden and falsely advertised fees” and require all-in pricing across industries, including rental housing. NAA was actively engaged in the advanced notice of proposed rulemaking and will remain so in this next phase of the rulemaking process. NAA will need your help to ensure the industry voice is heard. SCRHA will keep members updated on how they can help. Read more.
