Legislative Updates,

New Rental Laws Coming in 2024
SCRHA reported last week that several bills were signed by the Governor and are now law. SB 567 (Durazo) alters the law for certain no-fault just cause scenarios. AB 12 will limit security deposits to no more than one month's rent with very limited exceptions. SB 267 will require housing providers to accept alternative evidence in lieu of credit screening when the applicant has a government subsidy. Also recently signed was SB 712 (Portantino) having to do with e-bike storage and the safety of rental units. While most bills go into effect January 1, SB 567 goes into effect April 1 and AB 12 is effective July 1.

The County of San Diego is spearheading a regional effort to house homeless veterans. "Leave No Veteran Behind" seeks to achieve functional zero for veteran homelessness in the county through partnerships with regional, state, and federal partners. Members with vacant units or units on notice to vacate are encouraged to sign up for the 211 Interest List.

The County is holding a Landlord Seminar on October 27, from 10 AM - 12 PM at the County Operations Center (5530 Overland Ave., 92123) on the first floor in Room 124.
