Victory! AB 1157 Fails in Committee
You Did It! AB 1157 Rent Cap Bill Fails Passage
After a lengthy hearing in a room packed with tenant advocates, AB 1157 failed to get enough votes to get out of the Judiciary Committee. The hearing started with the author, Assemblymember Kalra, promising to strike the part of the bill that would remove the single family home exemption currently in the Tenant Protection Act (AB 1482). Members of the committee were pleased with that change but engaged in substantial discussion about lowering the existing rent cap and the impacts on housing providers who also face rising costs as well as future investment and housing production.
SCRHA and CalRHA lobbyists testified against the bill as did numerous other organizations, including the Building Industry Association, Realtors, and more.
Thank you to the members and non-members who together sent thousands of messages to legislators. Your voice was heard!
Make sure you and your colleagues are signed up for SCRHA Action Alerts. New bills and bad ideas will be coming forward in the coming month. The deadline for legislators to introduce bills is February 20.
